How the Key West Express Works

Getting to the terminal

From Siesta Dreams, it’s about 5 minutes south on San Carlos Blvd to the terminal on San Carlos Island, and you never cross the Fort Myers Beach bridge. At last check, parking was $20 per day right on site. Reserve a spot ahead of time, or pay at the ticket office the morning you leave. Boarding starts at 7 a.m. and wraps up by 7:30, so plan to pull in around 7.

Booking your tickets

Book online with Key West Express. You’ve got two ways to buy:

  • Full fare: refundable, minus a change fee ($25 per person if you cancel 3 or more days ahead, $40 within 2 days, and $60 on the day or for a no-show).
  • Advance fare: at least 8 days ahead, $170 for Monday to Thursday trips and $180 for Friday to Sunday. It’s non-refundable, but if plans change, the value stays on your account for two years.

Fares include everything, with no port fees or surprise add-ons. The fares and fees above are as of October 2026, so confirm the current numbers when you book.

On board

The ride is part of the fun. Settle into the climate-controlled cabin or head up to the sun deck for the views. There’s a galley with light bites (breakfast sandwiches, burgers, chicken fingers, and snacks) and a full bar. The main deck is ADA accessible.

A few house rules: no coolers, outside alcohol, or glass. If you have food restrictions, you can bring a small soft-sided container (about six-pack size). Each passenger gets two free carry-ons up to 22 x 14 x 9 inches.

Arriving in Key West

You’ll dock at 100 Grinnell St in Key West’s Historic Seaport, a short walk from Duval Street and Mallory Square. No car needed.

Day Trip or Overnight?

Go for the day if you want a taste of Key West without packing a bag. You’ll have about 5 to 6 hours to wander Old Town, eat your weight in conch fritters, and snap a photo at the Southernmost Point. You’ll be back at Fort Myers Beach later that evening.

Stay a night or two if you want the full Key West experience: the nightly sunset celebration at Mallory Square, late dinners on Duval, or an early-morning trip out to Dry Tortugas National Park, which leaves from Key West. Just choose a different return date when you book.

Bringing extras? Standard bikes ride along for $100 round trip, and pets in carriers are welcome for $60 round trip. Both need a reservation (fees as of October 2026).

How to Spend Your Day in Key West

Key West’s Old Town is compact and walkable, so you can see a lot in a day. Here’s an easy plan:

  1. Late morning: stroll the Historic Seaport. You’ll step off the boat right into it. Stretch your legs along the harbor and get your bearings.
  2. Lunch: go local. Conch fritters, fresh fish, and a slice of key lime pie are practically required.
  3. Afternoon: hit the classics. Wander Duval Street, then head about a mile south to the Hemingway Home & Museum (say hi to the famous six-toed cats). The Key West Lighthouse is right across the street, and the Southernmost Point buoy is a short walk from there.
  4. Save your feet. Rent a bike, hop a pedicab, or ride the Conch Tour Train to cover more ground.
  5. Late afternoon: head back to the seaport. Boarding for the ride home starts at 5 p.m., and you’ll need to be on board by 5:30.

Local tip: in summer, the sun sets after you leave Key West, so grab a spot on the sun deck. You might just catch the sunset from the middle of the Gulf on the ride home.

For a day trip from Fort Myers Beach, the ferry wins for us every time. You get there rested, and someone else does the driving.

Tips for a Smooth Ferry Day

  • Book early in winter and spring. Peak season fills up, and booking at least 8 days ahead gets you the lower advance fare.
  • Get there by 7 a.m. That gives you time to park, check in, and grab a good seat before boarding closes at 7:30.
  • Dress in layers. The cabin is air-conditioned, and the sun deck can be breezy. Comfortable walking shoes are a must for Key West.
  • Plan for a smooth ride. If you’re prone to motion sickness, sit on the main deck near the middle of the boat, keep your eyes on the horizon, and take any motion-sickness medicine before you board.
  • Watch the weather. Key West Express may cancel for weather. Refundable tickets are refunded minus online booking fees, and non-refundable fares stay on your account for two years.
  • Pack light. Two carry-ons ride free. A small day bag with sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat is all you need.

Notes for international visitors: Key West is part of Florida, so there’s no passport control on the ferry. Travelers 18 and older do need a government-issued photo ID, and your passport works perfectly. Prices are in US dollars, and tipping 15 to 20 percent is customary at restaurants and bars.
